Manhattan has a history that dates to the early 19th century. It was founded in 1872 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania who had heard about the area’s timber and mineral wealth.

The town served as a major hub for the booming mining, timber, and fur industries, which provided employment and a steady influx of money to the area. Even though the population of Manhattan never grew to more than a few hundred people, the town was a bustling center of activity.

During the late 19th century, Manhattan began to diversify its economy. A number of businesses, such as banks, department stores, and hotels, were established in the town. This allowed the residents to take advantage of the area’s natural resources, and also provided employment to many of the town’s residents.

In the early 20th century, Manhattan’s economy was further bolstered by the opening of the nearby Yellowstone National Park. This allowed the town to benefit from the influx of tourists and business that the park attracted.

However, the town’s fortunes changed in the mid-20th century when the Great Depression hit. Many of the businesses in Manhattan were forced to close due to the economic downturn, and the population started to decline.

In the late 20th century, Manhattan experienced a revival thanks to a new influx of people, businesses, and tourism. Today, the town is a popular tourist destination, as well as a center for outdoor recreation and entertainment.

Manhattan has a long and interesting history, and it remains an important part of Montana’s culture to this day.

One of the main attractions in Manhattan is its location in the Gallatin Valley. Surrounded by the Bridger and Crazy Mountains, the Gallatin Valley offers a stunning backdrop to the town and provides plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities and exploration. Residents of Manhattan can enjoy hiking, camping, fishing, boating, biking, skiing, and snowmobiling in the nearby mountains or explore the area's many lakes, rivers, and streams. The high rate of sunny days also makes it a great place to enjoy the four seasons.

Manhattan is also home to a variety of businesses, schools, and churches, making it an ideal place to raise a family. The town has several restaurants and cafes, as well as a library, movie theater, and shopping centers. Residents of Manhattan also have access to a great healthcare system, with both rural and urban medical centers in the area.
