Frenchtown was once a thriving community built around the Smurfit-Stone Paper Mill, which closed in 2015. It was named after two French Canadians who made the area their home. It lies about 16 miles southwest of Missoula on I-90, one of America’s main thoroughfares. Frenchtown has a library branch of the Missoula Public Library and has K-12 public schools. Frenchtown Park hosts a spring fed lake with trout and other fish and is an excellent place for beginning canoers and kayakers.
