The town was named for Belt Butte, a nearby mountain which has a dark layer resembling a belt. This mountain supplies Belt Creek which flows through the town.

Belt was home to Montana's first coal mine, which supplied fuel to Fort Benton.

Rivers, mountains and forests abound in the area.
