White Sulphur Springs is the county seat of Meagher County. It was originally called Brewers Springs, after James Scott Brewer, who laid claim to the thermal springs in 1866.  In 1876 the town became known as White Sulphur Springs. 

White Sulphur Springs has remained a popular resort destination since it was first developed as a health spa in the 1770s. White Sulphur Springs is home to The Greenbrier, one of the country's most luxurious and exclusive resorts.
