Featured City Libby

Settled in the 1880’s, Libby was named after miner Stephen Allen’s daughter, Elizabeth, or Libby. In 1919 a vermiculite mine was discovered near Libby and by 1963 the mine produced 80% of the vermiculite produced in the entire world. The byproducts of the mine resulted in Libby being declared an EPA Superfund site and the area went through a very challenging period until about 2015.

The area now relies on the tourism industry because of the inherent beauty and nature. The nearby Kootenai Falls and the Swinging Bridge were featured in the 1994 movie The River Wild.

Libby is known as the “City of Eagles.” You will find several eagle sculptures around town including three 60-foot eagles, one at either end of town.
